Excessive secretion of insulin in response to hyperactivity of the enteroinsular axis has not been established as the cause of idiopathic reactive hypoglycaemia. However, evidence is accumulating that patients to whom this diagnosis has been given may experience symptoms which are attributable to neuroglycopenia at higher arterial blood glucose levels than in healthy subjects and which consequently do not meet the diagnostic criteria for hypoglycaemia.
